The World Justice Project (WJP) is seeking a full-time Director of Data Analytics to work in the WJP's office in Washington, DC. The Director of Data Analytics will report to the Chief Research Officer and will lead data analysis conducted for the WJP's portfolio of global, thematic, and country-specific research projects. Key responsibilities for the position will include analyzing and interpreting large datasets for the WJP Rule of Law Index and other WJP research publications, managing and mentoring a team of data analysts, designing new survey instruments and methodologies in close collaboration with research Directors, overseeing the selection and review of all final data featured in WJP publications, and conducting other statistical and econometric research (including Big Data analysis) as needed. The ideal candidate will have a PhD in statistics, economics, political science, public policy, or social sciences; three years of professional experience producing statistical and econometric analyses for research reports; superior knowledge of survey methodology and analysis methods; exceptional attention to detail and accuracy; and a demonstrated interest in governance, justice, or rule of law issues.

Responsibilities: The main responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Analyzing and interpreting large datasets collected from the general public, legal experts, and other sources in 100+ countries for the WJP's portfolio of reports;
  • Managing and mentoring staff and consultants responsible for conducting data analysis;
  • Developing and reviewing new survey instruments, modules, and methodologies;
  • Developing and overseeing standardized internal processes for the selection, validation, and presentation of data;
  • Overseeing the completion of internal and external data requests;
  • Preparing and delivering presentations on the methodology and findings of WJP studies for external audiences;
  • Producing research papers and reports featuring analysis of rule of law data;
  • Using data visualization techniques to produce graphical representations of data in an understandable, efficient, and aesthetic manner;
  • Conducting Big Data analysis, including writing scripts, web scraping, and analysis of mined data;
  • Other duties as necessary.

Qualifications: The successful candidate will demonstrate the following skills and qualifications:


  • PhD in statistics, economics, political science, public policy, or social sciences;
  • Three years of professional experience producing statistical and econometric analyses of large datasets for research reports;
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel and Stata;
  • Experience developing survey instruments and methodologies;
  • Experience managing and mentoring research staff;
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously, meet deadlines, and interact with staff at all levels;
  • Ability to be flexible and work independently with little supervision;
  • Excellent decision making and problem-solving skills;
  • Strong written and oral communication skills;
  • Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy;
  • Highly dependable with the ability to work in a team-oriented environment;
  • Willingness to travel periodically, including overseas.


  • Understanding of rule of law issues in global contexts;
  • Skills in R (or other statistical software), Tableau, and survey software platforms;
  • Experience producing data visualizations;
  • Big Data experience, including writing scripts, web scraping, and analysis of mined data;
  • Professional fluency in a language other than English.
