Summary

The World Justice Project (WJP) is seeking a full-time Researcher to work in the WJP's office in Washington, DC. The WJP is looking for experienced researchers with the capacity to produce, publish, and communicate innovative, world-class research, with a strong desire to influence a global rule of law policy agenda.  Specifically, we are looking to hire an experienced researcher who can lead teams or work independently in collaboration with other researchers to deliver high-quality, cutting-edge research on a wide range of topics related to governance and rule of law. The ideal candidate will be a doctoral or post-doctoral candidate have superior research and analytical skills, experience with survey research and analysis methods, and a deep understanding of the rule of law in global contexts.

 

Responsibilities

The main responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Research, analysis, and operational work related to the production of the WJP's portfolio of global, thematic, and country-specific reports;
  • Conducting analyses on the WJP's original rule of law data and produce research papers or memos based on these analyses;
  • Writing reports summarizing the key findings and policy implications of the available data about justice systems around the world;
  • Other duties as necessary.

 

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have completed some coursework in statistics and quantitative methods, be comfortable with statistical concepts, and have experience writing and presenting scientific reports. A key dimension of this role will be to translate and communicate WJP data into accessible narrative accounts of key findings and their policy implications, thus equally drawing on a broad range of skills developed in the social sciences.

 

The successful candidate will demonstrate the following skills and qualifications:

 

Required

  • PhD in economics, political science, public policy or social sciences;
  • Project management and research design experience, including quantitative methodologies;
  • Experience with quantitative and/or qualitative research methodologies;
  • Excellent investigative, research, and analysis skills;
  • Excellent, communication, writing, and oral presentation skills in English language;
  • Experience working with think tanks, civil society organizations and/or government;
  • Willingness to travel periodically, including overseas.
  • Be passionate about research and policy work

       

        Preferred

  • Knowledge of statistical programs, such as Stata, R, Python, MATLAB, SPSS;
  • Understanding of rule of law issues in global contexts;
  • Experience with program evaluation, including interviews and quantitative analysis;
  • Ability to speak and write in a language other than English.

Physical Requirements

While performing the responsibilities of the job, this person will frequently be required to use finger dexterity as well as sufficient hand dexterity to use a computer keyboard and be capable of reading a computer screen.  This person may need to remain seated for long periods of time, have the ability to perform repetitive motions, grasp objects, including a writing instrument, stand, communicate verbally and hear well enough to detect nuances, and receive detailed information.  This person may be required to walk, push or pull objects, bend, squat, reach, or kneel. Vision abilities required by this job include close vision for expansive reading and data analysis.  This person will be required to meet the physical demands of frequent global travel, including to lesser-developed and remote locations.

Working Conditions

The work conditions described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing this job. This person will typically work indoors in a heated and air-conditioned office, with a mixture of natural, incandescent and fluorescent light with low to moderate noise levels.
