The World Justice Project's (WJP) Rule of Law Index team is seeking a full-time Program Associate to work in the WJP's office in Washington DC. This is a current vacancy, with an immediate start.

Responsibilities: The Program Associate will report directly to the Rule of Law Index Co-Director and will provide crucial support to the Rule of Law Index team. The Program Associate will assist with research and data analysis, and other long-term projects on the status of the rule of law in different countries as well as on the mechanisms by which the rule of law operates and affects economic and political life. This position will focus primarily on overseeing the production of country reports. The main responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Contribute to the data analysis, research, writing, editing and design of the World Justice Project's Rule of Law Index graphical country reports and other WJP publications;
  • Coordinate the production of country briefs addressing various factors that affect the rule of law, including the production of a graphical report analyzing and summarizing the data collected in a new corruption module;
  • Contribute to projects and activities as they relate to data collection efforts, data presentation, and data visualization, including working with the team's designers to produce data visualizations and infographics;
  • Work closely with the team's designer to automate processes within design software applications to maximize efficiency when creating data-driven tables, charts, and graphs;
  • Contribute to the research, analysis, writing, and design of the WJP's Rule of Law Index annual report series;
  • Support other areas of the WJP's Rule of Law Index such as the survey creation, data collection, management of contributors, and management of online data collection platforms and CRM databases;
  • Help to manage administrative processes for the research team, including contract negotiations, payment processes, and day to day administration of consultant and vendor contracts;
  • Provide general programmatic support, including research, editing and proofreading documents and presentations, assisting with Index calendar management, and coordinating logistics for travel and meetings;
  • Assist with the management of a team of Rule of Law Index interns, including with on-boarding and training processes;
  • Undertake rule of law research and analysis as necessary.

Qualifications: This position is open to graduates (B.A.) with excellent attention to detail and strong writing and research skills. International experience and foreign language skills are preferred. The ideal candidate will have completed coursework in international affairs, social sciences, journalism, economics, policy studies, regional studies, or pre-law.

Successful applicants will have two to three years of relevant experience, and be bright, highly dependable, and motivated with a strong academic track record and an enthusiastic interest in the rule of law. The successful candidate will demonstrate the following skills and qualifications:

  • Experience with report production;
  • Experience working with quantitative survey data. This includes data cleaning, validation, analysis, and visualization;
  • Strong professional writing, research, and communication skills;
  • Strong skills in CRM database management, online survey software and IT platforms, and Microsoft Office;
  • Experience with or knowledge of survey methodology and design;
  • The ability to manage large databases (strong skills in Microsoft Excel required; experience with and knowledge of STATA, SPSS, R, or other statistical analysis software is a plus);
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, multicultural environment;
  • English fluency is required; fluency in an additional language (including Spanish, French, Portuguese, Arabic or Russian) is a plus;
  • Experience recruiting, training, and managing interns is preferred;
  • The ability to work independently as well as in group settings, the ability to manage his or her own workload, and the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and work under deadline pressure.

Physical Requirements

While performing the responsibilities of the job, the employee is frequently required to use finger dexterity as well as sufficient hand dexterity to use a computer keyboard and be capable of reading a computer screen. Also, the employee may need to remain seated for long periods of time, have the ability to perform repetitive motions, grasp objects, including a writing instrument, stand, communicate verbally and hear well enough to detect nuances and receive detailed information. The employee may be required to walk, push or pull objects, bend, squat, reach, or kneel. Vision abilities required by this job include close vision for extensive reading and data analysis. The work conditions described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing this job. The employee typically works indoors in a heated and air-conditioned office, with a mixture of natural, incandescent and fluorescent light with low to moderate noise levels.
